7 Must Have Foods for Low Carb Weight Loss

Low carb diets force the body to use fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. Proper food choices are needed to maintain a low carb level in the diet.

Low carb diets are proven to promote weight loss when followed correctly. The aim of a low carb diet is to eliminate carbohydrate stores and force the body to use fat as the primary source of energy. Once the body converts from burning carbohydrates to burning fat for fuel, your body enters ketosis. Ketosis is not the same as the dangerous health condition ketoacidosis. When starting a low carb diet you must clean out your kitchen cabinets and refrigerator of all carbohydrate-rich foods and replace them with low carb whole foods. Low carb eating may help dieters having trouble losing weight, like women in menopause.

Unsalted butter – Butter is high in fat and contains no carbohydrates. Unsalted butter contains high quality cream because there’s no salt to cover the taste of low quality cream. Use butter to cook foods and dress meats and vegetables.

Sugar-free mayonnaise – Many brands of mayonnaise contain sugar, despite reporting no carbohydrates on the label. Southern-style mayonnaise does not contain sugar. If you can’t find a mayonnaise without sugar, choose a mayonnaise with sugar listed near the end of the ingredient list. The first ingredient is the most abundant in the recipe and the last ingredient is the least abundant.

Whole meats – Whole meats are purchased in the fresh meat department of your grocery store. Frozen meats tend to be injected with solutions that may contain sugar. Stay away from hot dogs, processed lunch meat and sausage as these may contain sugar.

Dark green leafy lettuce – Romaine and green leaf lettuce are the ideal replacement for bread. You can roll chicken salad, meatballs and other types of meat in lettuce leaves for a fast, low carb meal or snack.

Baby spinach – Baby spinach not only works well in salads but as a morning green smoothie. Spinach contains very few carbohydrates, but it is rich in vitamins and nutrients.

Radishes – Cut the ends of fresh radishes and place in boiling water for 5 to 10 minutes for a healthy, low carb potato replacement. While radishes don’t mash well due to high water content, they do taste like a mild turnip.

Low-carb meal replacement shakes – Despite cutting out all sugar from your diet you may crave something sweet once in a while. Low carb meal replacement shakes come in chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, wild berry and other flavors. The carb counts typically range from one carbohydrate to three carbohydrates per shake depending on the brand.

Eating a low carb diet means cutting out sugar and starches and eating a high fat, high protein diet to promote weight loss. With a little research you can replace nearly every high carb food you once loved with a healthy low carb option.
